Baby Steps is a bright, sing-along picture book with lyrics by Camille Harris and The Silly Jazz Band and adapted to the tune of John Coltrane's renowned bebop song, "Giant Steps." This book is a means to help families celebrate their child's first steps with music. The book features wonderfully drawn artwork by Allison Tran with families of various shapes and sizes as their child takes their first steps. This book is different than any other picture book. Apart from introducing young readers to the world of jazz and its deep cultural roots in Black American music, it also concludes with an educational section. The ending offers entertaining explanations of essential jazz topics such as "vocalese," "bebop," and the renowned artist John Coltrane. This is lovely entertainment for children.
Baby Steps projects a clear message to all readers by highlighting the importance of relationships between children and the supportive adults in their lives. I loved how the artwork made a special place for every relative's role. Allison Tran does a great job of instilling serenity and good vibes in this picture book. The diversity portrayed in the illustrations feels like a breath of fresh air. The nature of this book is also inspiring since it makes both youngsters and adults eager to push their musical abilities further than they could have imagined. I would definitely include Camille Harris's book in every home bookshelf as it makes the perfect companion to enjoy every child's first steps.
