Blue Dream is a contemporary fiction novel written by Xavier Neal. Ryder Collins and Presley Morrison were high school sweethearts, but they were much more than that. They were soulmates and destined, it seemed, to spend the rest of their lives together. Neither sought for anything more than that, but outside forces were against them. Ryder's father accosted him when he returned one day after a date with Presley, and he drunkenly demanded that Ryder stop seeing the one girl and start playing the field. It was, after all, the manly thing for a young man to do. Wanting more than anything to please his father and finally get some approbation from the man, Ryder did just that. It was a brutally swift and painful parting for both of them, and the shock waves of their breakup reverberated throughout the high school they attended.

Xavier Neal's contemporary fiction novel, Blue Dream, is an enthralling story that unfolds as the two thwarted lovers, Ryder and Presley, relive the past. The author sets the two of them in somewhat parallel circumstances: Ryder is in a rehab facility for his addictions and Presley is assisting her therapist/author friend by participating in her research for her next book. This literary device works wonderfully, and the reader can't help but wait for the next session to begin and the continued story to unfold. Neal's characters are deftly painted and authentic; their stories leap off the page, and I found myself unable to wrest my attention from their words. Blue Dream is a beautifully written tale that resonated quite strongly with me. It's most highly recommended.
