Breaking the Cage by Nassa Haymour is an inspiring tale of one young woman’s struggle to break free from the religious and societal constraints placed on her by culture and to “follow her dreams”. Like her mother before her, Nassa dreamed of a life of glamour, freedom, and world travel as an air hostess, particularly for Dubai Airways, whose stewardesses always portrayed an air of sophistication and beauty. Unlike her mother, Nassa was determined not to fall into the accepted pattern for women in her strict, conservative, Muslim Lebanese family tradition. Marriage and motherhood might be fine, but not if they interfered with her dream of traveling the world as a modern, free, independent Muslim woman. Living with her family in Brazil, Nassa must somehow find a way to defy expectations, her family’s objections, and her innate shyness and insecurity to follow her dream.

Breaking the Cage is a genuinely funny and warm story that highlights the importance of living one’s truth. Author Nassa Haymour perfectly captures the dilemma faced by young Muslim women in today’s fast-paced, internet society. Exposed to all the options available to them in the world, they find themselves torn between their conservative family and societal traditions and their dreams of success and independence. What impressed me most about this author’s story was her ability to recognize her self-deprecation and work on improving herself to the point where she was able to prove to the world that she was the self-confident, independent young woman she dreamed herself to be. I particularly appreciated the bond that developed between Muslim Nassa and her Jewish therapist. The realization that people are fundamentally the same, equally capable of love, forgiveness, and understanding, regardless of their religious and ethnic identity, should resonate with everyone worldwide. The author’s engaging writing style and her total openness and honesty shine through on every page, ensuring that readers will not only empathize with her difficult journey but also become deeply invested in rooting for her success. This powerful and inspirational story deeply moved me, and I highly recommend it.
