Author Avalok brings readers yet another mesmerizing collection of poems with Poems of Captain Coddiwompler: Tacking Onwards. The book opens with a poem in which the narrator searches for light and hope through imagination and poetic creativity. The narrator finds peace and joy trekking in the snow-capped mountains and the lush green valleys of the Himalayas. When the gods, emperors, leaders, dictators, and tyrants convene for a meeting, a madman devises a plan to get rid of them all. Two lovers part ways after their painting and poetry clash. The narrator likens the justifications of war to grasshoppers in the desert. A dictator summons his personal secretary to establish his own version of a rules-based world order. The narrator wishes for rebirths because one lifetime isn't enough to fulfill their dreams.
One of the many reasons I love reading Avalok's books is the sheer variety of poems and their themes, and this collection is no different. Poems of Captain Coddiwompler is for readers who crave an easy, relaxing read that makes them feel good and leaves them hopeful. I find Avalok's poetry very optimistic despite the thematic differences in these narratives. This book features poems on a wide range of topics and ideas that include natural beauty, war, survival against all odds, resilience, and much more. I also enjoyed the satirical nature of some of them. Avalok's social commentary about war and tyrannical leaders is on point, and I found it equally humorous and insightful. If I have to use one word to describe this book, it would be entertaining. Poetry enthusiasts will find this collection unique and very enjoyable.
