Caterpillar's Surprise by Janet Halfmann tells the tale of two friends, a tadpole and a caterpillar. The caterpillar wants to take part in the ball, a big event in the forest, but she worries about her appearance. Her friend the tadpole is always there to console and encourage her, although the caterpillar remains troubled about the way she looks. One day the caterpillar spins a chrysalis, concerned that she won’t wake up in time for the ball. Her friend promises to wake her, but as the ball approaches, the tadpole can’t seem to rouse her friend. When the caterpillar finally emerges as a butterfly, her friend is nowhere to be found. Is winning the blue ribbon at the ball still the most important thing after all?

Caterpillar's Surprise by Janet Halfmann is a lovely story that touches on insecurities and friendships. Throughout the tale, the tadpole encourages her friend the caterpillar and reassures her of her special charm. This is a truly important lesson that needs to be conveyed, especially to young girls. I love the way that this story illustrates how each individual’s differences are pleasing in their own right and even if you change over time you remain beautiful. I also appreciated the positive image of the friendship between the two characters. A friend should encourage and support you and always make you feel good about yourself, regardless of the way you are. This is a lovely story with such a constructive message and I would highly recommend it.
