M. Kevin Hayden’s Locked-In follows Aram Sarin, a paralyzed young man surviving in a post-war, climate-ravaged 2049. Aram lives in a luxury penthouse in Ottawa, solely dependent on specialized tech and his cybernetic companion, Gilda. Their quiet, simple existence ends instantly when anti-technology rebels launch a devastating bombing that levels the building. Buried in the rubble, Aram is saved by Gilda, triggering a frantic run for their survival. The duo must travel through hazardous wilderness and unfamiliar sanctuaries to escape the urban warfare. To make their situation much worse, a vengeful insurgent leader is tracking them down because of a past grudge against Aram’s family. Dodging these threats, Aram and Gilda are forced to rely on unverified transit systems and unpredictable allies just to cross the country safely. But what will happen to Aram if his mechanical suit loses power before they reach a secure sanctuary?

M. Kevin Hayden’s Locked-In keeps your eyes glued to the page to see how they survive the next mile. I loved how the story develops, subtly weaving in details about Aram’s family’s past while the characters are constantly on the move. The momentum is relentless, which fits a dangerous journey story perfectly. The writing is enthralling, using quick, razor-sharp descriptions to bring the broken environment and political tension to life. The danger feels very real because Aram is fully exposed and always one power glitch away from disaster whenever his tech acts up. Hayden builds a heartfelt dynamic between the paralyzed lead and his robotic companion during the worst moments. Overall, it’s very exciting to explore a futuristic landscape where the dangers come from both political upheaval and harsh climate change. In the end, the story does a great job of balancing fascinating future concepts with a tight survival timeline. I’m certain sci-fi fans will love it!

Locked-In by M. Kevin Hayden centers on a man named Aram Sarin who lives with Locked-In Syndrome after a drug-induced stroke. He relies on his father’s inventions, a special neural adapter and an advanced caregiving android named Gilda, just to breathe and speak. Aram and Gilda’s life in a secure penthouse is upended when a radical anti-technology group attacks their building, forcing them to run for their lives. They try to head north to safety, eventually picking up an eccentric companion named Hypatia. However, a hostile rebel leader named Tone hunts them down relentlessly, seeking retribution for a family tragedy tied to Aram’s medical technology. It’s a grueling survival story where Aram must somehow outrun his pursuers while the very machinery keeping him alive is giving out.

This book is a masterclass in mechanical suspense. The tech world in this fascinating sci-fi novel feels remarkably tangible, especially because the precise mechanics behind the neural links and chest-compressing suits make the constant threat of a system malfunction seem looming and terrifying. The pacing starts with a sudden jolt and rarely slows down as the characters flee through underground train tunnels and over icy lakes. Every part of the journey feels realistic because the narrative acknowledges the limits of both the android’s machinery and Aram’s failing body. The prose is evocative and captivating, letting the raw panic of the situation drive the story. What really sticks with you is the bond that forms between Aram and his android guardian in the middle of all that danger. M. Kevin Hayden’s Locked-In is the perfect escape if you’re looking for an exhilarating, suspenseful chase set in a bleak future. It’s the kind of story that pulls you in and silently refuses to let go. An absolute must-read!

M. Kevin Hayden’s Locked-In follows Aram Sarin, a young man living in Ottawa in 2049, three years after a stroke left him conscious inside a motionless body. His father’s MindSocket technology lets him operate a mechanical suit, while Gilda, an unusually lifelike android, looks after him. Across postwar Canada, mounting hostility toward the privileged Primes has made Aram’s family name a dangerous one. When an attack destroys his home, a mysterious woman uses his neural interface to direct him toward Northern Lights, a distant northern refuge. With Gilda beside him, Aram sets out through a country increasingly divided by violence. The journey draws in Hypatia, an eccentric stranger who seems able to hear his thoughts, as a relentless pursuit pushes the limits of the technology keeping him alive.

M. Kevin Hayden’s Locked-In is outstanding dystopian science fiction, with Aram’s reliance on technology rendered frighteningly believable. You can feel how much his safety depends on a machine that could fail him. The world-building is exceptional, with ROC troopers admitting summoned travelers to the Rapid-Loop train while crowds pound against their shields, yet Thundertree’s Indigenous residents welcome Primes as equals. Gilda is my favorite character, thanks to the tenderness behind her fierce loyalty. Even as her battery runs low, she urges Aram to carry on. Hypatia brings a jolt of unpredictability through her doubts about Gilda’s directions. The suspense is exceptional, with Aram switching off his K-suit as an intruder enters, leaving you aware of his vulnerability. The pacing gives every frantic escape intensity while quieter intervals let the characters breathe. Readers on the hunt for unique dystopian speculative fiction are in for a treat. Very highly recommended.
