City of Illusions by Judith Works is an entertaining and compelling contemporary women’s fiction read. The story follows a dissatisfied woman named Laura, who believes that a year-long job in Rome is just what she needs to spice up not only her life, but also her marriage. Laura and her husband Jake embark on a life-changing journey abroad, learning more about themselves and each other than they ever thought possible. The trip proves much more complicated than it should, as Laura and Jake fall captive to all the temptations the historic place has to offer. Will the trip bring them closer together or is it too late to save their unhappy marriage?

I found City of Illusions to be a gripping read. I became really invested in Laura and Jake’s marriage, and was really rooting for them to resolve their issues and be happy together. The author also does a superb job using the fascinating city of Rome as the backdrop for the story. With descriptive and eloquent narrative, Works really brings the atmosphere and culture of Rome to life in the reader's mind. I found the dialogue and character reactions to what was going on around them to be realistic. What a mess Laura and Jake get into in Rome! It was definitely an entertaining read and I was turning the pages long past bedtime to find out what happened next. I would recommend City of Illusions by Judith Works to fans of romance, action and intrigue genres.
