In Fever Dream, Pendergast discovered that his wife was murdered. Twelve years previously someone had tampered with her gun when she and Pendergast were hunting a lion. The lion attacked her and pulled her body off. Pendergast dearly loved Helen. He was devastated at her death. The story ended with a cliffhanger. Cold Vengeance picks up the story in Scotland. Pendergast and his brother-in-law were on a hunting trip. But what were they stalking? Or who was stalking who? Is Pendergast really dead? How could he have survived the marshes. There is so much more I'd like to tell you about this book but then it wouldn't be a surprise.

It was delightful to see a return of Corrie. I’m eager to see what part she will play in the next installment. We also got a closer look at Constance. Cold Vengeance answered some questions but asked even more. In this book we see a whole different side of Pendergast He is a man driven by anger, passion and a desire to make someone pay. It was refreshing to witness the depth of his love for Helen.

Preston and Child are two of my favorite authors. I have read everything they have ever written and loved all but two. This series is their best by far. Preston and Child know how to write an excellent plot, but even more important, they know how to create and develop characters that the reader cares about. I must suggest readers should review this series in order. Throughout this series fans have met several interesting characters. I love the way the characters just happen to pop up here and there throughout the tale. While their appearance may be brief, each manages to either close some loop holes or open a few new ones.
