Scott Brody’s Keeping Pepper follows Ed Silver, who visits his old college friend Michael Pepper, known simply as Pepper, at a Las Vegas assisted-living facility during a motorhome trip with his wife Stacey. Pepper is seventy-one and living with dementia, yet flashes of the man his friends have known for decades remain unmistakable. Ed believes Pepper still deserves life beyond locked doors, so a bold decision puts him on the road toward a reunion in Northern California. The trip brings Pepper back among familiar faces as his sense of the present sometimes slips away from him. Stacey must judge what he can handle from one moment to the next, while Ed decides what responsibility now requires. For Pepper, the journey becomes a chance to live outside institutional walls again.
Scott Brody’s Keeping Pepper has psychological thriller fiction down pat, with a cast that puts a distinctly human edge on the suspense. Stacey Silver is written with sound judgment suited to situations that can change quickly. The author knows exactly how to show that judgment in motion. After explaining Pepper’s memory trouble during the hotel security interview, Stacey lets him take the time to recover the crucial floor number himself. Sandy Martin is my favorite; her instinct for Pepper brings an easy intimacy to their scenes. At the farm, she quietly supplies a lost word, leaving him laughing for a moment that says plenty about how naturally she reads him. A guy named Will, with a perfectly suited last name, supplies the darker turn as archived anonymous calls begin pointing toward an unsolved murder, drawing an old crime into the present. This is smoothly written with plenty of twists, so readers drawn to character-led psychological thrillers are in for a treat. Very highly recommended.
