Willoughby is finally back home and with his family, but he is a troubled man about the most recent events, especially watching Sydney fall from the monastery wall. Why would she do that? The answer eludes him. He has not only inherited Sam’s Convent Garden apartments in London but his artificial intelligence too, when Sam died. Beelzebub is determined to destroy everything that Willoughby holds dear and he is ready with his dark army. In order to defeat Beelzebub, he will need to find the Fifth Friend, the same who has sent him help in the form of The Keeper. This friend knows something they don’t know. Finding the friend might also help locate Sydney, but it is a mission that will take the team across mysterious cities, put them in the crosshairs with time-traveling vampires, and the king of dragons, and other enemies. While they find it difficult to locate the mysterious Fifth Friend, they have little time before everything falls apart.
Cryptic Spaces is the fourth book in the Enigma Series by Deen Ferrell and a great read for fans of science fiction, fantasy, and time travel. The story follows sophisticated, elaborately developed characters on a mission that pits them against all kinds of enemies, including supernatural ones. I love stories that are told in a strong narrative voice and that feature characters that I want to stick with, and Ferrell has created such a story in Cryptic Spaces. The stream of consciousness is absorbing and I loved to follow characters like Willoughby, absorbed in thought and seeking answers. T.K., Antonio, James Arthur, and Hauti are wonderful characters as well. They are rock-solid and their adventure is one that will have readers feeling as if they were part of the team. The first-person voice is engrossing, the plot is cleverly written, and the prose is gorgeous. Cryptic Spaces was a wonderful, delightful ride for me.
