Cult of Darkness by Barb Shadow follows the long-term consequences of a demonic presence named Black as it affects several people over two different timelines. As a child, Olivia survived a violent supernatural event that left others dead and led to Dom being wrongly blamed and imprisoned. Now, twenty-two years later, she returns to her hometown as an adult deeply connected to Black and determined to expand his influence. She buys an abandoned apartment building with a dark history and begins creating a network of followers. At the same time, Tom, who grew up with Olivia, begins remembering disturbing pieces of his childhood and starts investigating his mother’s death, the strange nightmares he still has, and the link between his past and Black. As new tragedies happen and old secrets reappear, can Dom and Tom stop Olivia before it's too late?

Cult of Darkness by Barb Shadow mixes supernatural horror with psychological tension, and I felt the combination worked well because the author does a great job of tying the paranormal events to the characters’ personal histories. The different timelines and POVs give the story a layered feel, and the settings—small towns and abandoned buildings—support the sense of isolation and tension. The writing style is immersive, and the pacing is even, especially when the story moves between past trauma and present danger. Olivia, Tom, and Dom each show how fear, guilt, and confusion can shape someone’s life, and their development is consistent with the dark world they’re caught in. I love how Shadow skillfully treats demonic influence as both a supernatural threat and a psychological burden. Fans of occult-themed books will enjoy this tale.

Cult of Darkness: From the Darkness Book 6 by Barb Shadow delivers an excellent story that superbly combines tragedy, mystery, fear, courage, and conviction in a captivating way. It all started when Tom, we later learn, unwittingly brought home a black cat that he later realized was possessed by a demon called Black. But later, Black merges with Olivia, Tom’s foster sister. Dark events often happen mysteriously, leaving people unaware of this evil, which leads to a chain of tragedies. A demon slayer called Dom discovers that Olivia has a demon in her, but after trying to kill the demon, he is falsely accused of trying to murder the seemingly innocent Olivia. Many years later, Olivia is amassing an army of the undead. Soon, she will be too powerful to stop.

Cult of Darkness by Barb Shadow draws the reader in slowly but effectively. The author keeps her readers hooked and on edge until the end. The story moves at a good pace, with every chapter keeping the reader enticed to continue reading. Shadow brilliantly incorporates scenes that demonstrate the demon’s power. She uses excellent imagery to describe the undead, making it an exceptionally vivid piece of storytelling entertainment as she dives into the dark, scary paranormal realm. Tom's sadness was something that held me captivated as he lost his mother at such a young age. I loved the scenes with Olivia and Reilly. It was hilarious how the evil Olivia kept calling Reilly Brutus, despite his protests.

Dominic was pursuing a demon, but sadly, it had merged with Olivia. When he's caught with a knife on top of Olivia, he is accused and convicted of trying to hurt a little girl. Many years later, we meet Tom and his friend Paul, who are studying to become ministers. Later on, Tom learns that his mother had been one of the many mysterious deaths years ago. Olivia has also returned to the town of Montgomery and bought one of the houses people consider to be haunted due to its history. She is also keen on serving the demon. As events transpire, Tom discovers that his imaginary friend from childhood was a demon called Black, and it had left him for Olivia. He embarks on finding Olivia. Dominic was also released from prison after serving years with his friend as his parole officer. How will things unfold in Cult of Darkness by Barb Shadow?

This was a fascinating read, and despite Cult of Darkness being the sixth book in the series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone. The pacing is steady, keeping readers intrigued and eager to discover the next twist in the flawlessly flowing plot. Barb ensured events were vividly captured, which not only made me shiver but also captured my imagination and glued me to my seat as the events unfolded. This thought-provoking work also got me thinking about fear, religion, and the concept of the afterlife. The characters were well-developed, and the writing was crisp, engaging, and filled with well-crafted dialogues that brought the story to life. This was an amazing read, and I look forward to reading something else by Barb Shadow.
