Darkest Before Dawn is the first book in the League of Guardians series by Ava Vixion. A compelling tale of good versus evil, dark versus light, with a hefty dose of romance thrown in, this is a lovely story that's going to generate lots of emotions, from love sickness to excitement! Ferrian is the main female lead, and she's had a rough time of it so far. Believing that she's cursed, she's being pushed to the dark side, much to the dismay of her guardian, Remi. Amongst all the other paranormal angels vs. demons stories out there, this one stands on its own and does possess a curiously unique take on the genre, which I very much appreciated.
Ava Vixion is clearly a talented writer. Her turn of phrase was quick, smart, and full of action. The dialogue was a little stilted for my own liking and I wish the characters were a little more relaxed when speaking, but what they did have to say meant a great deal to the plot. The descriptions meandered a bit, but, overall, the plot was steadily chugging forward for the majority of the book. The romance was well developed and sweet, the author making sure to take the time needed to foster a believable relationship. I appreciated that there was a lot of world-building that Vixion did to make sure that Darkest Before Dawn made sense, and she did so with skill and aplomb.
