Hop on for a wild rollercoaster of a supernatural ride with Darby Harn's Dead Malls. It was 1983. Diane was happily working as a security guard at a mall when an unexpected nuclear holocaust ended her world as she knew it. Now, someone who can only be termed as extraterrestrial is after her. Diane soon realizes that the mall is a gateway to other worlds even more dangerous for survival than the one she came from. Additionally, there are others who, for some unknown reason, are interested in acquiring the Christmas catalog she used to own as a youngster. Why is everyone after Diane's catalog? Who is Dr. Hanson, and why was Thorne being manipulated? Find the answers and more in this supernatural crime caper.
Whatever you expect from Dead Malls, you will most likely finish the book wondering who could have possibly predicted this kind of storyline. Author Darby Harn weaves a captivating narrative that blends elements of science fiction, supernatural, and metaphysical themes, creating a thrilling tale that consistently subverts expectations and keeps readers on the edge of their seats. One of my favorite aspects of this book is that the narrative never seems to take itself too seriously. It allows the author to experiment with the tone and take the plot to places that push the boundaries of your imagination. At its core, I would call it a concept sci-fi novel with supernatural undertones. There isn't a single major protagonist, although there are a few characters who play important roles in the plot. If you enjoy sci-fi books with experimental narratives, this will be right up your alley.
