Lynn was 39 years old when she met Tony at the swimming pool at Columbia University in New York City. Tony was 29 at the time and was going through a divorce, but they clicked and got married three years later. Life went well for them, and they visited various countries like India and Vietnam together, which was a wonderful experience. Many years later, after a combination of symptoms and a subsequent MRI, she was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer, which had metastasized to her spine. What follows is a series of tests and scans that identify the type of cancer she has. Lynn is put on Tarceva, which has fewer side effects than other conventional chemotherapies. She is also able to access a new immunotherapy treatment, which is in clinical trial, as they seek the best care for her. How will things turn out in Carrying the Tiger by Tony Stewart?
Carrying the Tiger by Tony Stewart is not just about Lynn's story, but of courage and resilience as he experiences something that no one imagines ever going through. As a medic, it got me thinking about the healthcare system and how, sometimes, bureaucracy deprives citizens of the necessary guidance and support. This thought-provoking work also got me thinking about how standards of cancer management are different in various countries and how it affects the prognosis. It also expertly captures the importance of a multidisciplinary approach when taking care of patients with chronic diseases, and also the importance of emotional and mental health assistance for caregivers. This was an informative read, and I look forward to reading more by Tony Stewart.
