“Distant Thunder,” a contemporary romance novel written by Ann Gaylia O’Barr, is a story that will tug at your heart strings and leave you thinking about the characters long after you finish the book. Brooke’s son is joining the military and since she is a single mom she is going to be left all alone once he leaves. Neal is coping with the sudden death of his wife and also trying to sort through his feelings of guilt that are connected with her death as well as the details as to why she was in that place at that time. Brooke and Neal meet while on a train trip going from Washington, D.C. to the West. They find that they both have anger and hurt from their past loves and lives, but realize that there is a mutual attraction and connection between them. They spend time with Ethan and Kaitlin, a couple who have worked through their past issues and found love with each other; a kind of “mutual taking under the wing,” as they say. As these four individuals spend time together they all work through things, learn more about each other and struggle to move forward unraveling some secrets.

This is a sweet love story with some mystery thrown in as there are secrets and issues from the past dealt with and worked through. The characters are well-developed and they really come to life on the pages of the book. The characters are caught at a time of changes and growth in their lives. At the center stage is Brooke as she is trying hard to decide whether to follow her heart with her feelings for Neal and also her desire to try a different job. Readers are sure to like it as the characters are dealing with issues in their lives that many of us struggle with at various points throughout our lives. A great story that will leave you loving the characters and thinking about your own lives.
