What would you do if you noticed a friend was missing? In Sherrie Schmidt’s The Seashell Safe Harbor, everyone is looking out for one another to keep the harbor safe. When Turtle McGoo goes missing, the entire harbor, including Happy the Sailboat, heads out into the water to find the missing turtle. It’s not usual for Turtle McGoo to disappear. But the search is on, and with everyone on the lookout, there is hope. It’s all about teamwork and helping each other in a time of need. Pelican Hugh flies over the water, searching Turtle McGoo’s usual favorite spots. He meets up with Turtle McGoo’s sister, Turtle Tutu, who is also worried and is looking for her brother. Dolphin Rue sends a message to the pod of dolphins to be on the lookout. Will they find the missing turtle?

Sherrie Schmidt’s picture book, The Seashell Safe Harbor: Teamwork, is a clever story about friendships and working together as a team. The language is simple so that early readers can easily follow along and improve their reading skills. The plot develops at an even pace with lots of dialogue between the different sea creatures as they search for the missing turtle. The characters are all defined as caring creatures, always on the lookout for each other. The illustrations are bright, bold, and colorful, full of life and energy to help develop the plot. This is a great read, not just for the nautical aspects but also for stressing the importance of friendships and teamwork, not to mention that it’s imperative to know the safety rules for being around water. There is an interesting glossary at the end so young readers can learn some of the nautical terms that are used in the story.
