Dream of Her Heart is the third book in the Hearts of the War series by Shanna Hatfield, and even though I haven’t read the other books in the series, I found this one complete and utterly satisfying. It is wartime and before his departure on a new and dangerous mission, Lieutenant Zane West travels across Oregon to see one of his friends who has been wounded. But when he arrives at the hospital, he discovers, to his utter stupefaction, that the army captain has disappeared. Billie Brighton, a devoted nurse whose life is spent looking after wounded veterans, can’t keep a promise she made to herself when she vowed never to let her heart be stolen by a soldier. That is when she sets eyes on the handsome lieutenant looking for his friend. The attraction between the two grows with every passing moment, but is there a future for them?
This is a beautiful story with sophisticated characters; a wartime romance that explores the hearts of two powerful characters. Shanna Hatfield reminds readers of the power of love and infuses the writing with great realism. Readers experience the emotional tension, the feelings of the characters, and their humanity. From the descriptions of the scenic views to the solitude of the sick to the fusion of hearts, the author keeps it real, evoking powerful feelings in readers. Dream of Her Heart should be read with the heart and I loved the strong voice, the elaborately developed characters, and the plot points. The premise is strong — a man looking for his friend and discovering that he has disappeared. While the plot is fairly simple, the author builds on the emotional part of the story, creating characters that win the hearts of readers. Great writing, a compelling narrative voice, and memorable characters.
