As the World Burns by Aaron Ryan is a gripping sci-fi novel that follows fifteen-year-old Cooper Calloway, the most loved and most hated boy alive. A deep-core seismic experiment went catastrophically wrong when he was two. The result left Cooper with the power to unwittingly destroy the planet: with every heartbeat, he steals angular momentum from the Earth itself, converting it into heat. The skies turn red, the days shrink minute by minute, and firestorms rage permanently. Hidden seventy-five miles underground in The Atrium, the President's son becomes the scapegoat when the truth leaks out. The world demands one boy must die so twelve billion can live. His father, President Xandrius Calloway, must choose between sacrificing his own son or letting the world burn. When Saginaw Bay ruptures into The Chasm, Xandrius makes one desperate decision to save his son and the world. Will he succeed?
Aaron Ryan's novel is filled with characters I rooted for, especially Cooper, whose loneliness comes through in his voice and vocabulary. The president is one of the most fully drawn characters, inspiring the ire and hope of millions; the paparazzi dog him, but his love for his son is the book's central inspiration. Readers will also love the android, Valenté, who is the embodiment of Scripture, especially where Jesus talks about “laying down one’s life for one’s friend.” The worldbuilding is impeccably accomplished, and the author feeds readers' imaginations with imagery brimming with detail, from the Gravascend's five-minute plunge to the boiling oceans and Coriolis hurricanes. Fast-paced, As the World Burns is a page-turner that examines faith and sacrifice. It is propulsive and hard to put down.
