Dynasty of Deceit by Timothy R Baldwin is the second mystery involving Cassie Maddox, a private investigator in Lenape City, where her father is a police detective. When Cassie discovers financial irregularities in her Uncle Alfred’s non-profit foundation, Ignite Global, she is torn between family loyalty and doing what is right. It appears that scholarships to prestigious universities are being sold to the highest bidder, and her uncle seems to be at the heart of the operation. The deeper Cassie and her forensic analyst, Rafi Alvi, dig into this scandal, the more important the players appear to become. It seems this might be a scandal that reaches up into the highest echelons of the business, academic, and civic structures of Lenape City. In a series of twists and turns that will leave readers gasping, Cassie and Rafi uncover a dangerous and highly lucrative operation that will have major consequences for the elite and previously untouchable leaders of the community.
Dynasty of Deceit is a standalone read, and the author does a tremendous job of dropping little gems of information into the narrative to bring readers up to speed. Timothy R Baldwin has created a very likable and relatable character in Cassie. She is a no-nonsense character who has made mistakes in her past and is determined to follow the evidence regardless of where it leads and who might be implicated. The twists and turns and the addition of new suspects and surprises give the plot real depth, and uncovering new directions felt like peeling an onion, with each new layer presenting more fascinating layers underneath. Although ultimately a suspense mystery, I did enjoy the focus on Cassie’s non-existent romantic life and the slow-burning relationship between her and Rafi that has readers wondering, will they, or won’t they? This is essentially a story about loyalty, relationships, family, betrayal, and doing the right thing no matter the consequences, all related in a fast-paced series of story arcs. The author uses the conclusion to hint at the next adventure for Cassie and Rafi, and I will be looking out for it. I highly recommend this book.
