Finding Myself...Facing Cancer by Sarah Fenlon Falk is a memoir that movingly documents a woman’s journey with cancer; poignant and gritty, a tale of courage in the face of pain and despair. In her diary in 1992, the author wrote: “There’s no easy way around it—cancer eats away at not only the physical, but also the emotional and spiritual parts of a person as well. It’s been eating me up for months.” And this book captures this reality in a brilliant manner. It is 2015 and Sarah is married to a loving man who has given her four handsome boys when she is diagnosed with breast cancer. Note that she’s had bone cancer as a teenager, seventeen years old then, but this diagnosis will change her life in many ways. Follow her journey of treatment and how she finds the courage to face each painful day.

The writing is evocative, and the narrative features journal entries, beautiful poems, and insightful reflections. Sarah Fenlon Falk demonstrates through her experiences that we can turn our pain around, that we can learn to name it, to accept it, to choose peace in the face of adversity. In this book, readers will connect with the humanity of the author and experience her vulnerability. She lays bare the secrets of her soul, her fears and anxiety, but what stands out is the message of hope that comes across in this narrative. This book carries the message that a medical condition isn’t an end to life and that a dire diagnosis can be an invitation for us to look at life differently, to learn to seek meaning and to add quality to the way we live. There are moments when readers will feel a tear run down their cheek, but they will feel empowered and encouraged to look past their pain and discover wellsprings of joy waiting to burst forth. Finding Myself...Facing Cancer is well written and the author’s voice comes out powerfully. A wonderful offering and an inspiring and insightful look at what it is like to live with cancer.
