Firecrackers is a riveting action thriller by A.W. Baldwin. Fourteen-year-old Nash and his friends live near Denver, at the base of the Rocky Mountains. It is summer, and the friends enjoy mischievous pirate games and all sorts of adventures. Once, walking through the woods, Nash hears a woman’s moaning and sees what looks like a woman's ghost. He tells his friends and intends to check it out. Nash’s friend Leroy tells him a creepy story about the ghost that haunts the old Harris house near where Nash heard the moans. Nash and his friends go on further expeditions and meet Alice, an old woman who lives in that house and seems to be maltreated by a couple of large men. The boys decide to get to the bottom of it and unwittingly find themselves entangled in a life-threatening criminal conspiracy. But can they rescue Alice and stay alive?

Firecrackers was a rare book that I finished in one sitting – so unputdownable and fast-moving! Mischievous pirate games, pranks, humorous puzzles, and adventures without limits kept the momentum and made me marvel at the unrestrained engineering ingenuity of Nash and his friends as they kept enhancing their pirate weaponry. Indeed, all their inventions were patentable, but my favorite was the applesauce grenades! The story made me feel as if I were on Nash’s team, and I wish I had been. Thoroughly entertained by all the mischief, I admired the boys’ bravery, selflessness, and determination to help Alice. Last but not least, I appreciated how A.W. Baldwin created admirable role models for teenagers. I highly recommend this brilliant, fascinating, and riveting story to YA readers and young-at-heart adults.

Firecrackers by A.W. Baldwin tells the story of Nash and his close group of friends as they hang out during a wild Denver summer that goes from normal backyard pirate games to a pretty scary reality. It all starts when the boys investigate strange noises at an old, run-down house nearby and accidentally uncover a huge jewel heist gang connected to a crooked official. Suddenly, their goofy summer pranks and backyard inventions become the only things keeping them safe while they try to help their older neighbor, Alice, who is being kept locked up by these thieves. Nash has to step up as the leader of the crew who’s trying to look out for his friends while dealing with a neighborhood mystery that keeps getting more dangerous by the day. Will Nash and his buddies manage to outsmart these criminals before their summer break turns into something much worse?

A.W. Baldwin’s Firecrackers is an exciting coming-of-age adventure novel that does a great job of capturing a nostalgic atmosphere and a truly funny sense of humor. Reading it makes you remember what it felt like to be a teen with total freedom, back when your neighborhood felt like a new world with endless things to discover. A real highlight is the bond among the four boys, as their quick banter and teamwork keep the plot moving smoothly. Their closeness gives the whole story a grounded, lighthearted mood that keeps the dangerous situations from coming across as too dark or overwhelming. Baldwin establishes a great suburban backdrop that fits perfectly with the unfolding crime mystery and those loud, firecracker-filled moments that make the kids’ summer so memorable. It’s a fascinating look at how quickly childhood games can turn into a real adventure when you have a group of friends who refuse to give up on each other. I enjoyed reading it, through and through.

Firecrackers by A.W. Baldwin follows Nash and his friends Bug, Leroy, and Stevie as they spend their summer building forts, riding bikes, and getting into the kind of mischief that only determined kids can find. Their curiosity about the old Harris house leads them to Alice, an elderly woman who seems frightened and alone, and the boys soon realize something is wrong inside the house. As they try to understand what is happening, they find themselves dealing with adults who are hiding more than they admit. The boys’ determination to help Alice pulls them into a situation that is far more serious than anything they expected. Their summer becomes a mix of adventure, worry, and the kind of trouble that comes from trying to do the right thing.

Firecrackers by A.W. Baldwin is an enjoyable action story that captures the feel of a summer spent with friends who always seem to find the next challenge waiting for them. The pacing is even from start to finish, moving from the boys’ regular summer activities into the situation at the Harris house without feeling rushed or forced. Nash’s development is clear as he goes from playing pirates to dealing with something far more serious. Alice comes across as a strong and capable woman once the truth is out. The writing is easy to read, with short chapters and plenty of light moments from the boys and their inventions. The small-town setting adds to the story’s charm, giving readers a familiar backdrop for the boys’ adventures, and the mystery gives the book just enough tension to keep young readers turning the pages. Readers who enjoy simple action stories with childhood friendships and a bit of intrigue will find this an enjoyable book. It’s a good choice for kids who like adventure stories with clear characters, steady pacing, and a touch of danger.
