Fire Scion 1: The Hidden City by Kathe Todd is a fantasy story. Andi Drakespring is 15 years old and fireblood, which means that he can turn into a dragon whenever he wants, just like his mother. All he wants is some respect. That’s not too much to ask from your parents is it? Even famous parents, those who saved the world, long before Andi was born. He wants to do something that will make them and others notice him but what can he do? He mooches along until he stumbles over something quite amazing, a quest that will take him to another dimension. But his parents won’t help him so, like any teenager, he decides that won’t stop him. Together with Fjuri, his friend, and Meri, his sister, he sets off, fully aware of the trouble he’s going to be in when his parents finally catch up with him! What follows is the adventure of a lifetime, with a very real element of danger thrown in. Fire Scion continues the story of the children of the fireblood and is the first in a new trilogy.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Fire Scion 1: The Hidden City by Kathe Todd. The story was fascinating, exceptionally well written, and very well aimed at Kathe’s target audience of young adults. She clearly has an amazing imagination and that shows in the story. The plot was well thought out and the characters very well developed. I suspect I would have benefited from reading the Fireblood trilogy but, in my opinion, this book can easily be read separately. Kathe Todd has the ability to draw a reader in, a bit at a time, until they are completely hooked, with nowhere to go but to the end of the tale. Now I can’t wait to read the second book.
