Some kids are meant for more than homework. JT Bird’s Our Children in the Shadows is the story of one of those kids: Haven Cassidy. She’s a clever twelve-year-old girl dealing with bullies and family struggles. Haven also attends a prestigious London school where she has a reputation for skipping lessons, getting in trouble, and running unofficial investigations. But it’s her sneaky pranks that get the attention of a mysterious government intelligence agency known as The Guild of Whispering Shadows. Haven and her quirky new friend Sunny are then pushed into a series of missions to prove their worth. The more she learns about the people around her, the more she begins to understand how appearances can be deceiving. Will Haven’s curiosity lead her to answers or more questions?
I had a great time reading Our Children in the Shadows by JT Bird. It has a good blend of action, mystery, friendship, and emotion. Haven immediately stood out. I loved that she’s brave, funny, and never afraid to speak her mind. The writing is easy to read and has a steady pace. As an educator, I think it would be a fun choice for upper elementary and middle-grade readers. Teachers and students could have conversations about friendship, bullying, courage, and standing up for others. As a follow-up, the kids could write their own secret missions. Andy Catling's detailed illustrations are a nice addition and give readers another way to connect with the story. Anyone looking for a fun tale about secret societies, magical twists, and fast-paced adventures will want to pick this one up. One thing I took away from this story is that ordinary people can do extraordinary things. For that reason, I think this book would make a strong addition to homes, schools, and library collections.
