In the children's picture book Follow That Crow! by Carolyn Macchia, Frankie loses her treasured locket, which contains a photo of her late grandfather. She searches her home, including under the furniture and in her brother Finn’s secret box, but cannot find it. While helping her grandmother at the chicken coop, Frankie learns that a crow named Clancy regularly brings her grandmother shiny objects in exchange for snacks. Not having told her grandmother about the lost locket, Frankie wonders if Clancy may have taken it, enlisting Finn and their friend Carter to help retrieve it. From here, the kids employ a creative and modern approach to seeing if the locket is in Clancy’s nest, attempting to retrieve it with a lesson learned at the story's conclusion.
Follow That Crow! by Carolyn Macchia is a really fun little story, and as much as my little reader and I loved following Frankie, the imaginative pursuit of Clancy and the ensuing search served up the most playful surprises. Patricia L. Brooks’ illustrations use a bold primary color palette and artwork in a refreshingly classic comic book style to impart humor and a real liveliness to each scene. Macchia’s writing pairs well with the illustrations, and together they create a treat full of some quick detective work and a nod toward honesty. While Frankie does not completely solve the problem herself, the ingenuity is in food, and this is, overall, a joyful read for children and adults alike. Recommended.
