Baxter Allen thought that everything was back to normal after finally casting Ifrit out of his life for good. No more wishes granted through manipulation and murder, and Bax’s loved ones are safe. Still, his guilt-fueled nightmares continue to haunt him, and to silence his fears, he and his friends, Jason and Ashley, decide to lay the demon to rest permanently. Unfortunately, fate seems to have a dark sense of humor because Ifrit is released back into the world by Ifrit’s new and unknown master. How will they banish this evil djinn without a high-powered apocalypse to help this time? Who is Ifrit’s new master, and what does he or she want? Read From Ash and Darkness by J.L. Sullivan to find out!
From Ash and Darkness by J.L. Sullivan is a sequel to remember with its thoughtful storytelling and creative growth. The extraordinary pulses just beneath an ordinary life for the protagonists. A once seemingly normal life was forever changed by the appearance of one wish-granting djinn, Ifrit, and that same djinn seeks to wreak havoc once more. Sullivan pushes the characters into new territory, enriching the narrative with greater complexity and heart. This sequel lives up to the first book; it might even surpass it in terms of raised stakes. The plot held my attention so completely that I was pulled into Bax, Ashley, and Jason’s adventures. It felt like I was there with them as they tried to find a way to banish Ifrit again, but with less likely chances than before. The characters are incredibly real, and their growth as the story progresses contributes meaningfully to the story’s impact. The author manages the rare feat of honoring everything that made the original so compelling, all while boldly expanding the story's scope, plot, and emotional depth. This book entertains with its sharp dialogue and imaginative worldbuilding, pulling me into a spellbinding narrative that lingered long after I finished reading.
