Ghosts Among Men: A Samantha Davidson Novella is a paranormal private investigator mystery written by Laura Del. Samantha Davidson has been seeing the spirits of the dead since she was 10 years old. She's almost 25 now, and she's found that this ability is quite useful in her year-old occupation as a private investigator. While many in the local police department remain skeptical of her abilities, Detective Lance MacDowell has become appreciative of the extra help an authentic medium can provide during an investigation. When he calls her office with a new murder to investigate, Samantha's way ahead of him. That morning she was retained by a new client, a wealthy man who wants to find out what happened to his daughter Allison, a murder victim, and why. Allison was already in contact with Samantha and is there in the room as the private investigator speaks with her father, but Allison has no memory of what happened. Mark, Samantha’s office manager, has figured out a way for her to both retain her client and work with the police to solve Allison’s murder.

Laura Del’s paranormal private investigator novella, Ghosts Among Men: A Samantha Davidson Novella, is a classy homage to the noir crime genre that blends hard-boiled detecting and police procedurals with more than a touch of the supernatural. Her paranormal detective is a gifted medium whose world is inhabited by spirits who afford her little peace at times. Allison, her newest ghostly companion, is just such a trying presence, but Samantha’s getting involved in her story. Del’s plot is clever and unpredictable, and she keeps the story taut and intense as the reader gets involved in Samantha’s terrifying dream sequences. The supporting characters of Mark and Detective Lance MacDowell are well-defined and complex, making this a satisfying and enjoyable mystery. I’m looking forward to reading more of Samantha Davidson’s case files. Ghosts Among Men is highly recommended.
