Receive: 100 Reflections for the Early Days of Motherhood by Laura Emanuel is a small, gentle book built for the exhausted, overwhelmed hours of new parenthood. Written by the founder of Mothership Rising, it began as a series of daily text messages sent through her app during her own postpartum months in 2020, when isolation was heavy for so many new mothers. The book opens with an invitation rather than a lesson: to slow down, look in the mirror, and simply take a few moments for yourself. From there, each of the hundred short entries, from "Saying yes is brave" on Day 2 to the closing breath work on Day 100, offers a single thought a tired mother can read in seconds, either working through the book in order or flipping open to whatever page finds her that day.
Laura Emanuel writes in short, plain sentences that feel less like a book and more like a friend checking in, which suits the audience perfectly since most new mothers do not have the bandwidth for anything longer. The pacing is built for interruption: each reflection is self-contained, so a crying baby or a missed night of sleep never breaks the experience. The theme carries the book on its own, gently reminding readers that asking for and accepting help is a strength rather than a failure. I found the recurring invitation to simply receive, rather than constantly give, to be a quietly powerful idea that many parenting books skip over entirely. Receive is a comforting, easy companion for anyone in the fog of early motherhood.
