Grave Past by Mark Gilleo is the third book in his Dan Lord series. Dr. Joffee, a psychiatrist, hires PI Dan Lord after a disturbing session with one of his clients. Grace Homan’s anxiety attacks have steadily progressed since she started working with Judge Thomas Cardin eight months ago. She agrees to undergo hypnosis to find the root cause, but what she uncovers baffles Dr. Joffee. He must find the answers, and PI Dan Lord has just the credentials and referrals to see it through. Can he prove there was a murder thirty years ago, even if nobody has been convicted after all these years? Lord has had some difficult cases, but this one takes on a different dimension.
Mark Gilleo goes beyond the typical suspense thriller, blending reincarnation and politics in this memorable novel. Grave Past closely follows the narrative of a private investigator who steps out of his comfort zone to investigate a decades-old murder. Time is not on his side as the suspected murderer is aspiring to a high political seat. As the story unfolds, we find Lord’s determination unyielding, even in the face of danger. PI Dan Lord is well-developed, with many talents that give him an advantage in sniffing out false statements. This story delves into the dynamics of authoritative power that warps memory, exploring how it can corrupt and influence others, until a witness who has waited for years to speak up finds her voice. Watching Lord navigate the deceit, handle a persistent reporter, and deal with an unconventional witness makes Grave Past an exceptional read. The twist at the end turns this into an epic read that you never expected.
