Hauntfest at Harbor’s Hope by Angie Tompkins is the second book in the Coastal Fresh Start Romance series, but it can be read as a standalone. Cass Whitley is a glass artist who has been put in charge of the lantern ghost walk for Hauntfest at the Evergreen Tide Resort in the coastal North Carolina town of Harbor’s Hope. It’s her chance to show she can lead a project, and she has every stop on the route planned. What she hasn’t planned on is Detective Jeff Harker running event safety, the same man who brushed off what happened to her last summer. He’s sorry now, and he’s trying to make it right. Then a strange blue-green light shows up in the window of the old Goodman Boathouse, a ghost video goes viral, and route signs start moving. Are these just pranks, or is someone out to ruin Hauntfest? And what is the old boathouse hiding?

Hauntfest at Harbor’s Hope by Angie Tompkins has everything you want in an autumn read: amber lanterns, salt air, pumpkin pastries, and a little shiver of spookiness. Angie tells the story from both Cass's and Jeff’s points of view, which works well because you see how much each of them is holding back and why. Jeff’s apology feels believable, and watching him learn to listen to Cass instead of just writing things up in a report is one of the nicest parts of the romance. The mystery stays light, but it does build, starting with harmless pranks and getting more dangerous, and it’s a satisfying puzzle to piece together. The side story about the town’s official legend and who gets to tell it adds more depth than you’d expect from a romance. Lacey, Lou, and the other resort staff bring plenty of humor. It’s a clean cozy-mystery-style story and easy to settle into. A lovely pick for fans of small-town romance, cozy mysteries, and anyone who loves a festive autumn setting.

Hauntfest at Harbor’s Hope by Angie Tompkins showcases a delightful small-town vibe. Cass has returned home to her late grandmother’s house, and Jeff is a detective with the local sheriff’s office. Both struggle with isolation, trying to find a foothold in their community, but their shared passion for detail has already turned them into unintentional adversaries. So when Cass is given the honor of organizing Hauntfest, she’s dismayed to discover that Jeff has been assigned to handle festival security. Their inevitable clash is only stalled by the strangeness surrounding Cass’s designated lantern walk route. An eerie light appears in the upstairs window of a boathouse with a sad and contentious history. Markers move, and vandalism nearly injures Cass at the worst possible moment. Calamity throws Cass and Jeff together as they race to solve the mystery before Hauntfest is destroyed—and in the process, they discover an attraction with more power than even the town’s checkered past.

Hauntfest at Harbor’s Hope is a lovely read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Angie Tompkins crafts driven characters with great depth and sensitivity. Cass is someone I recognized as wounded and buttoned up, afraid to share her hopes and dreams with anyone. Jeff is a slow-burning flame with a tendency to spark at the wrong moments. Cass trusted him once, and he let her down, and I loved how that fact permeated their growing attraction as a constant, seemingly insurmountable wall. The novel’s dominant theme is trust, presented not only in Cass and Jeff’s relationship but also in the damage experienced by Theo and his family during the tour he witnessed as a boy. The fallout from broken trust has created friction between Cass and Jeff and also fueled Theo’s obsession with the truth. I loved the description of Harbor’s Hope and the introduction to its colorful inhabitants.
