Her Cumberland by Susan Paisley is an imaginative historical novella that chronicles Rebecca Sevier’s life as her family arrives in Tennessee in search of better prospects during the late 1700s. The story highlights her resilience and follows her continuous determination to honor her father’s dreams. In 1785, her family leaves their home in Virginia and travels towards Tennessee. As they travel down the Tennessee River, the land’s rich vegetation and abundant wildlife look promising. Along the way, the family faces numerous dangerous events. The perilous Tennessee River’s descent almost drowns a member of their family. Cold winters, food shortages, and risky waterways are some of the perils they encounter on the way. Once settled, Indian attacks leave family members dead but Rebecca must carry on. Though she leaves the land many of her family perished for, she returns to continue her father’s legacy.
In Her Cumberland by Susan Paisley, lush landscapes create a hopeful background for the family as they travel through Tennessee. Though they face uncertain times, Rebecca’s father provides outstanding leadership. As one of the main characters, he is seen to be wise and decisive, and an inspiring patriarch of his family. Even when she faces heart-breaking loss, Rebecca’s strength carries her forward and she does not forget her roots. I loved the enchanting river scenery whose beauty is captured in the descriptions. Romance woven into the story adds flavor to the book. Susan Paisley's historical fiction work, Her Cumberland, follows the moving story of a family’s journey through the eyes of an inspiring main character.
