The standout is Freya Homestead, functioning through detachable habitation capsules positioned beneath the Sickle Mountains, beside atmospheric processors and public plazas. For me, Oliver is the novel’s strongest emotional anchor. His engineering curiosity repeatedly pushes him toward forbidden systems connected to his father Kaspar’s COG Egg. I love Sarah Farley. A smart and capable female, she refuses to abandon missing personnel beneath floodwaters and actually tranquilizes someone so she can continue searching. With sharp writing and an ending that promises more, I look forward to seeing where Nyland takes us next. Very highly recommended.

The dialogue smoothly transitions from everyday banter about the welfare of the colonists to the technical aspects behind running the colony. The narrative subtly emphasizes each individual's motives for joining the colony. Factor in the detailed combat scenarios and the graduated pacing, and the result is a fascinating story that will appeal to science fiction and action purists. I enjoyed The Unfolding and look forward to the next book in the series.

I must say, this is not a read for the faint-hearted. Nyland immersed me in the story’s high-concept, often disorienting setting with deliberate, visceral prose. This, alongside the multi-perspective storyline that took me back and forth between timelines and character arcs, gave the story a complex edge. One moment, I was following the characters on the Mairee colony, adapting to their circumstances. The next thing I knew, I would either be in the future, watching the team on the FNS Dainn plot their way into the colony, or members of the Stingray uncovering the disturbing fate of the FNS Brisinger crew, or back in the past, watching the flagship of the mission. This story will make you question survival, the nature of life, and the ideologies we live by.
