Hidden Agenda (Tales from the Robbery-Homicide Division Book 1) is a police procedural written by Peter S. Berman. Jeremy Hart is a criminal prosecutor in the District Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles. He’s been seeing Dr. Shari Bauer, a grief counselor, since his wife died in a car crash. It’s been over a year, and Dr. Bauer thinks it’s time Jeremy gets back into the world of the living. She gives him a ticket to a lavish charity event and challenges him to meet and chat with two women while he’s there. Against his better judgment, he goes to the event and finds himself, as he expected, adrift and eager to leave again. Then he meets her, a stunning woman named Claire, who seems to make it all so easy and effortless. They dance, and he starts to feel alive again, until she tells him that she’s married.

Peter S. Berman’s mystery novel, Hidden Agenda (Tales from the Robbery-Homicide Division Book 1) combines an engrossing police procedural with an intense and exciting legal thriller. Berman peoples his book with real life characters who get the reader deeply involved in the story. The courtroom scenes are fabulous and made me recall reading the old Perry Mason novels and watching the TV series -- only better. I’m a big fan of police procedurals and loved following Ulysses Gibson and Jennifer Donahue as they investigate the murder of Claire’s abusive and controlling husband. Berman’s background in law and law enforcement comes through in this very entertaining and authentic legal thriller. I thoroughly enjoyed Hidden Agenda and highly recommend it.

Peter S. Berman, author of Hidden Agenda, is a master thriller writer. In Hidden Agenda we meet Deputy District Attorney Jeremy Hart, a widower. Jeremy’s therapist encourages him to attend a social function where he meets Claire Carleton. Claire is a married woman, a very unhappily married woman. Claire’s husband Peter was very possessive and violent. Jeremy and Claire quickly fall in love and begin an affair. When Peter discovered Claire was unfaithful he beat her, breaking her nose, splitting her lips, and leaving bruises all over her face and body. Claire suspects Peter is plotting her demise. However, it is Peter that is murdered in his own driveway. Detective Ulysses Samuel Gibson, aka Gibby, and Detective Jennifer Donahue are called to the crime scene. Their investigation leads to none other than Jeremy Hart. What is the real motive behind the murder?

Author Peter S. Berman utilizes his knowledge as a Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney in his book Hidden Agenda. This tale grabbed my interest from the prologue and held it to the very last word. The brilliant plot slowly built to a crescendo and kept me guessing every step of the way. Author Peter S. Berman did a fabulous job creating the characters; even the secondary characters are well developed. Hidden Agenda is a must read tale filled with romance, intrigue, courtroom drama, and police investigation.

Hidden Agenda by Peter Berman is book one in the Tales from the Robbery-Homicide Division Series. Jeremy Hart works for the LA District Attorney as a senior prosecutor. Having lost his wife, he is seeing a grief counsellor who recommends that he attend a charity function to try to get back into the social swing of things. There he meets Claire, a woman with two children, who is trapped in a marriage she doesn’t want to be in. Her husband Peter is wealthy but abusive. Jeremy and Claire feel an attraction for one another and begin an affair, but Peter finds out and beats Claire. She tells Jeremy that she thinks Peter is going to kill her. Peter is found dead, shot to death in his driveway, and all investigations point to Jeremy as the culprit. But the detectives in charge don’t believe it and start looking deeper, digging into the death of Jeremy's wife. Will they determine what everyone’s Hidden Agenda is and find the true killer?

Hidden Agenda by Peter Berman was an intriguing mix of romance, murder and mystery. I did find it a little slow to start with, but it soon picked up speed and maintained it throughout the rest of the story. Peter Berman clearly put a lot of thought into this story to make it work. It has everything – a highly dramatic plot, plenty of intrigue and a little bit of wit to dampen down the violent scenes, of which there weren’t too many and they were fairly well spread out as well. Well written, look forward to reading more.
