Hidden Agenda (Tales from the Robbery-Homicide Division Book 1) is a police procedural written by Peter S. Berman. Jeremy Hart is a criminal prosecutor in the District Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles. He’s been seeing Dr. Shari Bauer, a grief counselor, since his wife died in a car crash. It’s been over a year, and Dr. Bauer thinks it’s time Jeremy gets back into the world of the living. She gives him a ticket to a lavish charity event and challenges him to meet and chat with two women while he’s there. Against his better judgment, he goes to the event and finds himself, as he expected, adrift and eager to leave again. Then he meets her, a stunning woman named Claire, who seems to make it all so easy and effortless. They dance, and he starts to feel alive again, until she tells him that she’s married.
Peter S. Berman’s mystery novel, Hidden Agenda (Tales from the Robbery-Homicide Division Book 1) combines an engrossing police procedural with an intense and exciting legal thriller. Berman peoples his book with real life characters who get the reader deeply involved in the story. The courtroom scenes are fabulous and made me recall reading the old Perry Mason novels and watching the TV series -- only better. I’m a big fan of police procedurals and loved following Ulysses Gibson and Jennifer Donahue as they investigate the murder of Claire’s abusive and controlling husband. Berman’s background in law and law enforcement comes through in this very entertaining and authentic legal thriller. I thoroughly enjoyed Hidden Agenda and highly recommend it.
