Hide and Seek has become a grown-ups game in this mystery thriller book by Paul Brown. Peter, Gavin, Colin, Cheryl, Michelle, Cas, Laura and Steven were best friends as kids and named themselves the Excellent Eight. They are now adults and gathered for Gavin’s funeral. Michelle and Colin have married and the seven friends go back to their house for drinks to remember the old days and catch-up on their lives. But they have been brought together for a sinister game which will have horrendous, scary and unusual results.
It is now morning, Peter wakes up in an empty cabin in the woods and has no idea how or why he is there. As he wanders around the cabin he realizes he has no money, no phone but only the clothes on his back. He walks back through Durden woods to Michelle’s house and finds it empty. He believes they must have gone out for lunch and is waiting for their return when a cell phone begins to ring. He answers and hears an electronic voice introducing himself as Celo and explaining that the Game is about to begin. Celo informs Peter that he is to play a game of hide and seek in which he is the seeker and each one of his friends are the hiders. He must find and save the life of each of his friends or they will die. The rules are simple, he cannot go to the police or ask for help because it will end the game and each player will be killed. Peter will receive one clue at a time. Each clue relates to an incident that happened to that friend when they were kids playing the game. He will be given a time frame to get to each hiding place and rescue that friend. Peter is forced to run from the police and face a day of horror before the game ends.
Hide and Seek was a page turner that had me hooked from the first word. Paul Brown's book has a feeling of suspense on every page with an ending I never saw coming. Hide and Seek will keep you on the edge of your seat until the climatic end. Paul Brown is a must read author for every mystery, thriller, or suspense fan. This book will keep you up late into the night until you discover who Celo is and why is he playing this game. The answer will surprise and amaze you.
