J.L. Michael’s Missteps Mending Devilish Ways begins in late 1928 as Alexandra Bathenbrook, an American photographer based in London, returns to New Orleans after more than a year spent building a reputation through assignments overseas. Alexandra wants answers about Astor Lys, a sinister man who has shadowed her since adolescence, surfacing around dangerous moments in her life. Her search draws her toward the occult world introduced by her aunt Adelaide de Chantraine, whose influence still reaches into Alexandra’s life. Meanwhile, her work keeps her moving across borders as she tries to preserve the independent future she has built for herself. With Alexandra determined to understand the purpose behind this pursuit, the mystery surrounding her family begins to follow her into every part of a life she has worked hard to make her own.
J.L. Michael’s Missteps Mending Devilish Ways does a beautiful job of putting Alexandra in peril far beyond its supernatural mystery. Alexandra is fascinating, with a fearlessness that suits a photojournalist willing to step directly into volatile situations for her work. The author develops her into a fully fleshed-out woman whose defiance is palpable. In Germany, Joseph Goebbels confronts her with four SA men, yet Alexandra answers his intimidation with a cutting remark after they drench her in pig blood. An Aegean assignment even sends her toward submerged ruins inside an experimental photosphere. The author shines in making the era a character in its own right, from Bugattis tearing through Monaco’s Tir-aux-Pigeons tunnel, to Uruguay’s World Cup squad quartered behind soldiers in Montevideo. Intelligently written and wonderfully immersive, readers who enjoy historical fiction with supernatural elements will adore this book.
