Homicide in Hope Town: A Cap & Maggie Miller Novel by Dave Gipe is a murder mystery. Cap and Maggie stumble over the body of a friend of theirs, floating in the creek where he drowned. At first glance, it seems to be accidental and the police are treating it as such, but Cap and Maggie think there is a bit more to the story. To help the widow, they decide to dig deeper and find out what happened. As well as the death of the widow’s husband, her son is also missing and it seems that the two may be linked. There are rumors of human trafficking and Cap and Maggie want answers to questions – was the son taken for forced labor? Was he taken for sex? Where does the voodoo priest fit in? These questions and many more need to be answered as they bid to uncover the truth, but the truth is not something they were expecting. This crime reached further than even they anticipated and now they have to make a decision – justice for the widow and her dead husband, or doing the right thing by reporting the crimes they uncover? They can’t do both.

Homicide in Hope Town: A Cap & Maggie Miller Novel by Dave Gipe was a good read. It clipped along at a relatively even pace and, even though I thought I had it sussed more than once, I didn’t and the ending came as a bit of a surprise. There are lots of twists and turns, not all of them leading to something tangible though. There’s also more than one story going on here and they all wind their way, side by side, and sometimes intertwine, through the course of the book, all coming together as the story reaches its conclusion. The character development was good and there are some very credible real-life story lines running through the plot, which adds more substance to it. I enjoyed it.
