Dogs are excellent companions for young children because they are playful animals that offer affection and loyalty. Young readers can learn about the activities of these pets in Hound on a Scrounge. The main character is Buddy, a friendly little dog, who is expressive and lovable at all times. After introducing himself, he teaches you tricks dogs can do, such as sitting. What Buddy loves most in the whole world is eating. He explains how he gets his food from under the table. He then tells a short story about the origin of the British tradition of afternoon tea, with an amusing interpretation. In this way, Maria Bucci, with illustrations by Martynas Marchiusm, shares an entertaining and interactive story that encourages an interest in pets.
Hound on a Scrounge by Maria Bucci shows a lot of creativity and uses a narrative filled with funny phrases and expressions. The first page, where there is a closeup illustration of Buddy sniffing at the reader, catches your attention. The first part was my favorite because Buddy explains the most common tricks done by dogs. He also invites us to try things like mimicking puppy dog eyes. Younger readers will relate to Buddy, and this story will help them approach reading as a game. The afternoon tea story is funny. Another positive aspect is Martynas Marchiusm's illustrations because they show Buddy as a cheerful and charming character. This story is perfect for preschool children to approach reading and develop an interest in animals.
