I Have Feelings, Too: Understanding Dog Communication by Anissa Svoboda is an engaging and educational book that introduces children to the fascinating world of canine body language. Through the perspective of Kaja, a Springer Spaniel/Lab mix, readers are guided on a neighborhood walk to meet various dog friends, each showcasing unique ways of expressing emotions. The story emphasizes the importance of understanding a dog's feelings and respecting their boundaries. It provides practical advice on how to interpret signals such as tail wagging, ear positioning, growling, and even subtle cues like "whale eye" or raised hackles. The narrative encourages children to observe and respond appropriately to these signs, fostering empathy and safe interactions with dogs.

The illustrations by Aneta Knoppová are vibrant and charming, bringing the characters to life in a way that captures the attention of young readers. The visual cues complement the text, helping readers better understand the concepts being taught. The inclusion of a "Parents’ Corner" offers additional tips to nurture healthy relationships between children and dogs. This section reinforces the idea that mutual respect and understanding are key to building trust and friendship with pets. Anissa Svoboda also encourages interactive learning by posing questions to children, such as how they might feel in certain situations or how they would react to a dog’s behavior. I Have Feelings, Too is a delightful book that promotes kindness, safety, and understanding in human-dog relationships. It is an excellent tool for teaching children how to communicate with dogs effectively. Families will find this book both enjoyable and educational, making it a wonderful addition to any bookshelf.

I Have Feelings, Too by Anissa Svoboda is about how to understand what dogs are trying to communicate. The story is told from the viewpoint of a dog named Kaja, who says that dogs communicate with a combination of their voice and body language. Kaja takes readers on a neighborhood walk and uses interactions with other dogs to explain why they’re doing what they are doing. She also periodically asks questions of readers. Throughout the book, there are double pawprints, which identify the “Parent’s Corner” and contain additional ideas for dog owners and others who are caring for dogs. The book ends with a “Discussion and Comprehension” page, which asks more questions about canine communication. There is also a summary of the seven dog breeds that are found in the book.

I Have Feelings, Too by Anissa Svoboda is a marvelous book. It’s both entertaining and educational. I learned a lot about dogs’ communication skills by reading the book. I liked the interactive nature. I also liked the advice on how children should talk to and touch dogs. The combination of writing from the dog’s viewpoint and getting readers involved by asking questions is very effective. This excellent information could save children from a potentially dangerous encounter with a dog. I know my children would have been captivated by this book when they were young and would have wanted it read to them, and later read it themselves, over and over. The illustrations by Aneta Knoppová are wonderful and perfectly match the text. I highly recommend this delightful and informative book to children, their parents, and their grandparents.
