In Another Time by Jessie Winterspring is a feel-good time-travel romance spanning decades and exploring love across shifting timelines. In 2020, Leo is twenty-seven and still living with his grandparents. He has been in love for years with a girl he once saw in an old photograph belonging to his grandmother. In 1956, in Spain, Celestina had never felt that she truly belonged. Her beloved father has vanished, and her mother has turned to alcohol for comfort. Everything changes when Leo discovers a heart-shaped bottle buried under a tree. After reading the note inside, he is pulled back to 1956, where the first thing he sees is Celestina running away. As he realizes that he is stuck in 1956, Leo turns to his nineteen-year-old grandmother and, with her help, he settles into life while trying to find a way back to 2020, all the while falling deeper in love with Celestina. When Leo believes he has finally found a solution—and hopes to take her with him—something unexpected happens, leaving him stranded in the future without his true love. A chance encounter with an Instagram influencer who recreates 1950s fashion and customs gives him renewed hope that all may not be lost.
Jessie Winterspring has written a wonderful time-travel romance with a fast-paced plot and plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. The multiple timelines and frequent time jumps are reminiscent of the Loki series, where characters encounter different versions of themselves. The story is told from both Leo's and Celestina's points of view, which works well and deepens the emotional connection to both characters. Themes of trust, love, and destiny run throughout the novel. The notion that different timelines can shape people into very different versions of themselves, sometimes even villainous ones, stands out in particular. The concept of parallel lives shaped by alternate choices and circumstances invites the reader to reflect on how easily our own lives might have turned out differently. There are many allusions to time-travel stories, such as Back to the Future, but the novel most often reminded me of The Time Traveler's Wife. In Another Time is a moving romantic story that unfolds over more than seventy years, and while it is very much a romance, readers will need to pay close attention to avoid getting lost in the threads of time.
