In Bad Faith by Geoffrey Carter follows the fortunes—and misfortunes—of Nelson West. Once a homicide detective in Chicago, West now works as a private investigator. When Lionel Bing hires him to investigate a large loan, West finds himself deep in a conspiracy that stretches from the boardrooms of Chicago to the depths of the Mexican jungle. It started as financial fraud, but when West joins forces with Mia Wentworth, a forensic specialist, together with Lionel, they soon uncover links to the Catholic Church, drug cartels, and a gold mine. The corruption runs deep, but when things turn personal, the stakes are raised, and West is in for the fight of his life.

In Bad Faith by Geoffrey Carter is a stunning, character-driven noir thriller. The plot is tight and fast-paced, but the characters are the real stars of the show. They are wholly realistic, likable people, flawed and with real emotional depth, especially the main protagonist. High-octane action interspersed with a little humor makes for a compelling read, one of those books that pulls you so deeply into the story, you are there until the very end. As the story moves, each character’s backstory comes out, adding new angles to the plot. The writing is crisp and to the point—every word counts. This will take you on an unforgettable journey, and it will leave you with mixed feelings—not about the story itself but about the crime and whether it should even be one. Mental health is also a strong theme running through the narrative. There are some scenes of violence, but it’s one story you won’t forget in a hurry. This is an entertaining read, and I hope to see more of this trio in the future.
