Are you ready for some short stories that will give you food for thought? In The Diversity Bridesmaid by Lilian George, that’s exactly what you’ll get. Here is a taste of what you’ll find in these pages. The bridesmaid in the title story has a shock in store when she discovers why she’s been invited to a wedding, but she has some even better surprises coming. An old husband tries to protect his blind wife from an impending hurricane. A young woman visits a fortune teller multiple times; will her dreams come true, or become nightmares? An out-of-work Washington lobbyist finds out the power of paying something forward. A young rollerblader and a middle-aged ambulance medic forge an unlikely friendship. And my favorite, the one about the divorced delivery driver and the old woman customer—I cried!

The Diversity Bridesmaid is a collection of 12 stories where everyday people’s stories come to life. There are stories of acceptance, misunderstandings, tenderness, forgiveness, and love, with an underlying feeling of hope throughout. The characters are just like those the reader would see on the street every day. They have the same needs, wants, dreams, and aspirations. Many readers may even see themselves in one or more of the characters or stories. Class, respect, dignity, fearlessness, and loneliness all seep through the pages. Readers will understand how the three little words ‘I got you’ mean so much. Even AI gets a mention when an algorithm determines table allocations on a cruise with surprising results. The Diversity Bridesmaid by Lilian George is the kind of short story collection to read curled up in your favorite chair with your beverage of choice. My only wish is that there were 20 stories, not 12; I could have read many more.

Sometimes life puts individuals in circumstances they never expected, and what they do next can change everything. The Diversity Bridesmaid: Twelve Stories by Lilian George is a short story collection about ordinary people facing very different moments. An aging husband cares for his blind wife as a hurricane approaches, while Summer travels to the Hamptons to serve as a bridesmaid and discovers there is more behind the invitation than she realized. Other stories introduce a former lobbyist whose life has lost its sense of purpose, a female architect determined to be valued for her talent, and a woman trying to navigate a difficult divorce. Readers also meet strangers brought together on a cruise, a woman whose rollerblades are an important part of her world, and a delivery driver whose kindness affects those around him. Although the situations vary, themes of loneliness, dignity, love, loss, prejudice, and the need for human connection run throughout the book. What happens when unexpected situations force people to decide how they’re going to move forward?

The Diversity Bridesmaid: Twelve Stories really got to me at times. Lilian George’s writing makes the characters' emotions easy to feel, even though their situations are very different. The first two pieces especially left me sad and hopeful at the same time, which isn’t an easy combination to pull off. Some of the others made me sympathetic, frustrated, and even angry, particularly the woman going through a divorce. On the other hand, I thought the delivery man’s story was especially sweet. The pace works well for a collection like this. Each selection has enough time to develop and reach a resolution, so someone could easily read one a day without feeling as though they had stopped in the middle of something. I also liked that perseverance runs through much of the book without every individual facing the same kind of struggle. Anyone who enjoys short stories about everyday people dealing with loss, relationships, second chances, and unexpected turns should find plenty to think about here.

The Diversity Bridesmaid is a collection of twelve short stories by Lilian George. An aging man takes care of his beloved wife, who has gone blind due to diabetes, but the arrival of a devastating storm turns their lives upside down. A young woman receives an unexpected offer to be a bridesmaid for her college friend, but soon discovers she was only chosen for her background. A former lobbyist crosses paths with a young boy who shows him the way toward hope after he lost everything. A failed marriage makes a man reevaluate everything, and he finds solace in memories of his time in the city of Lima. A woman makes her life choices based on a fortune teller's words, and it costs her everything.

Author Lilian George explores some key facets of the human experience through her slice-of-life tales. These include mortality, loneliness, faith, superstition, nostalgia, and more. I think anyone who likes realistic stories with emotional depth will find this to be an absorbing collection. George puts her characters into situations where they are forced to confront something important in their lives. What made these stories so engaging to me was the way these characters dealt with their circumstances. It was realistic and grounded. Some of these characters feel like you may have met them in real life. They are relatable, and I'm sure their story arcs will resonate with many readers. All in all, this was a very enjoyable book for me. If you like slice-of-life stories, you will love The Diversity Bridesmaid.
