Just Because… A Story Book About Self-Acceptance is a children’s picture book written by C.M. Harris and illustrated by Ashlynn Feather. Mrs. Freckle had a secret she hoped the kids in her class would never find out. She began her class by setting them the task of reviewing their math flashcards and watched them as they paired up and began to work. Then she felt that dreaded combination of sensations that heralded the thing she most feared would happen. Going over to visit with the class pet bird helped for a few minutes, but then it happened. What would the kids think? Would they laugh at her? Should she act as if nothing strange had actually happened? Then her class began to surprise her.
C.M. Harris’s Just Because… A Story Book About Self-Acceptance is a marvelous and very human story about a teacher who is selfconscious about something and how the open discussion of her strange quirk allows her class to share their own things that they think they have to hide. Suddenly, each kid in the class has their hand raised and is waiting to share their own “Just Because” story. Ashlynn Feather’s illustrations are marvelous! Her detailed panels make you feel as though you’ve actually entered Mrs. Freckles’s class. Kids often find comfort in being like everyone else; this book tells them it’s okay to be a little -- or even a lot -- different. Just Because… A Story Book About Self-Acceptance is most highly recommended.
