The First Letter & The Forgotten Path is the first book of Rushani Mahendran's Kural Inspired Stories series. For siblings Kya and Neo, the most tedious part of spending the summer with Paati (Grandma) is her history lessons. Seeking to evade her, Kya and Neo hide in the shed, only to stumble upon a mysterious stone archway that transports them to the ancient Tamil village of Thulir. Soon, the siblings come across the great poet and philosopher Thiruvallavar, who reveals they must unveil an ancient secret. After discovering the forgotten tablet in the ruins of an ancient temple, Kya and Neo follow the clues to find their way onto the Forgotten Path. Now, they must complete their quest to learn the secret of the first Kural and return home.
Full of magic and wonder, Kural Inspired Stories: The First Letter & The Forgotten Path is a feel-good adventure tale for young readers. Author Rushani Mahendran drops the reader into the scheme of things from the get-go, spinning a fast-paced yarn that keeps the reader engaged with a delightful blend of mystery, humor, and intrigue. Mahendran also does a brilliant job of incorporating Tamil mythology and philosophy into the narrative, and the story feels richer and more immersive for that. The light-hearted tone of the narrative will appeal to a broad range of young readers, especially fans of fantasy and adventure tales. Apart from the two main protagonists, I enjoyed the portrayal of Thiruvallavar. Toward the end, readers will also find a sneak peek into the next installment of the series. Young readers of adventure stories are in for a treat!
