Leaving Naples by Brian Hackett is a mystery/thriller that follows Lieutenant Dylan Parish. Dylan had a lifelong dream of living in Europe, and he fulfilled that by moving his family to Naples, Italy. With the promise of adventure and a beautiful life awaiting them, Dylan’s fantasy shatters when his wife and son are unable to settle in the new country. Louise and Carter try too hard to find some connection there. Things get a lot tougher when Louise is embroiled in a crime ring, and she becomes a person of interest. Their marriage broken, Louise takes Carter home, and Dylan is left behind. That was the opportunity for Dylan to embark on a romantic trip with his Italian assistant and experience Italy like never before. What he didn’t realize was that danger was lurking just around the corner. Dylan had no idea what fate had in store for him. In for a rude awakening, Dylan needed to make some tough decisions before it was too late.

Author Brian Hackett does a wonderful job of taking readers on a journey to Italy and immersing them in a mystery that never stops. At first, the story appears to be a family drama with a man struggling to find balance between his dreams, reality, and family obligations. However, as the story progresses, we realize there is more to the story than we thought. No one is perfect, and I love that. Dylan is a complex, layered character who is chasing a fantasy. He runs from reality and his responsibilities, while Louise is stuck living in a foreign country with no help or time to fully adjust. There were moments when I hated Dylan and was happy about his rude awakening, but at the same time, I wanted him to survive this chaos. Leaving Naples has layers of drama, suspense, mystery, and enough adrenaline to make the reader crave more. I cannot recommend this novel highly enough.
