Lies to Forever by Marlene M. Bell is a suspenseful murder mystery blended with romance. April Manning took leave from a firm of architects to look after her landlord, who was recovering from a major accident. But one day she found her landlord gone. An eviction notice was placed on her door, and all her bank savings were transferred offshore. Desperate to get back to work, April went to see the owner of the firm she had worked for, but he was away. April went to see him at home and found him dead in a pose that suggested unnatural causes. Involuntarily, April finds herself drawn into investigating what happened to her landlord and who killed her former boss. But will she succeed?

A fan of Agatha Christie-like cozy mysteries, I indulged in every episode of Marlene M. Bell’s Lies to Forever and could not get enough. It is one of those delightful stories where the author engaged me in the investigation from the start and let me discover the truth as the plot thickened. But, notwithstanding all the fair play and my four decades of reading murder mysteries, the ending took me by surprise! And what I appreciated most was the story’s depth in portraying sibling devotion, same-sex infatuation, resilience in life’s rough patches, how a misunderstanding may ruin one’s love life, and how parental abandonment affects a child. I highly recommend this fascinating novel to murder mystery fans, and I would love to reunite with April in a sequel.
