Lightning and Lawmen by Shanna Hatfield is #5 in the series about Baker City, Oregon. Dugan Durfey and Seth Harter are the two deputies who have each taken a shine to the new girl in town. Delilah and her father have moved to Baker City for the father to be the meteorologist. Delilah is fond of flowers and soon their yard is blooming with flowers. Delilah also likes birds. She draws them and studies their nests. She also climbs trees in britches in order to study the nests. The raccoon that has been living in their attic becomes Delilah's pet. There is a bet around town on whether the raccoon will chase off the birds Delilah is trying to attract. The mystery in the story has to do with robberies at a mine office, the meteorological office, and their home.
My favorite part of Lightning and Lawmen by Shanna Hatfield is the pet raccoon who saves the day. I liked watching Delilah tame the raccoon and treat it like a cat. I enjoyed the fistfight between the two deputies over Delilah's affections. I liked Seth's reasoning about chasing after Delilah. I appreciated the meteorological theme since I did not know they did this reporting that long ago. I enjoyed learning about the birds and the flowers. I loved the camaraderie among the townspeople and the teasing between husbands and wives. The kidnapping was exciting. This is not my first book by this author, and I have enjoyed them all. This is a clean historical romance.
