Ephraim Clark’s The Paris Spy Saloon follows Brad James, an American karate expert visiting Paris after finishing graduate studies in Madrid in August 1969. He plans to see his childhood friend Alice, who is interning at an American bank, before returning home. When Alice is attacked, Brad begins suspecting the people surrounding her as she grows reluctant to discuss her life in France. An encounter at Jacky’s Far West Saloon earns him a job as a bouncer, bringing him into contact with Albert Stilwell, an American Army deserter under U.S. Embassy scrutiny. CIA officer Gary Richards recruits Brad to investigate signs of a Soviet propaganda campaign targeting American policy in Vietnam. Working alongside Marine sergeant Chuck Hall, Brad follows suspicious connections through Parisian nightlife as his search for answers becomes increasingly dangerous.

Ephraim Clark’s The Paris Spy Saloon puts your nerves on alert. The suspense is excellent, rooted in the way a single movement can jeopardize an operation. A Citroën doubling back during surveillance proves the point, as does the briefcase theft at Le Dôme café. Brad James is a wonderful character whose protective instincts tell you exactly what sort of man he is. Just look at him helping Doris, a sex worker, fight off gang enforcers. Chuck Hall is my favorite for his extraordinary eye for detail, especially when the resourceful Marine identifies a disguised pursuer. Paris is used beautifully, with familiar landmarks serving as cover for covert business. Soviet propaganda strategist Arnaud de la Planchette meets a gang leader at Café de Flore, while darkness conceals an ambush in the Bois de Boulogne. In a testament to my authority on settings here, I had a hot chocolate at Café de Flore less than a week ago. I just wish I'd had this amazing book with me then! Very highly recommended.
