In Love on the Perimeter by Lloyd Devereux Richards, seventeen-year-old Llewelyn Davies is a sensitive boy struggling with anxiety. Losing his mother and being abandoned by his alcoholic father leaves him in the care of his grandmother, but he lacks self-confidence, always shutting himself away. His grandmother signs him up for a Quebec wilderness canoe camp, hoping he will learn leadership skills. What he expects at the camp is mosquitoes, not murder. The camp is a front for a smuggling scheme, and when a deal turns deadly, Llewelyn finds himself on the run from a hit squad. He is with Eloise Broom, a red-haired fellow camper and $200,000 of wanted money. They face difficult weather conditions, and as they overcome each challenge, an incredible bond grows between them.
Lloyd Devereux Richards crafts a compelling survival tale with unforgettable characters, especially these two beautiful, broken souls. Llewelyn is a medicated youngster with low self-esteem, who even apologizes for existing. Eloise is riddled with grief over the death by drowning of her little brother. The two characters seem to match each other, scar for scar. The pacing races through the floatplane ambush, a shooting, a waterfall plunge, and a punji pit. Love on the Perimeter is packed with twists and surprises, and while the action makes the story breathless, the flashbacks to Llewelyn's dying mother and streams of consciousness temper the pace and inject emotional currents into the story. This well-plotted novel is a wonderful ride through booby-trapped marshes, a lethal farmhouse, and the walls two wounded kids must break down to let love in.
