In Zrinka Jelic’s Love Remains, Olivia Owen survives every day by being a brittle corporate executive officer until an alternate-reality experience transports her into the future. In this new reality, she meets a man and a lifestyle that force her to reexamine the way she has defined what is most important to her. In addition to the bond growing between Olivia and Tom Medar, the two must work as a team to solve a murder plot. As they seek to unravel the case, they are aware that at any unsuspecting moment they could be separated from each other with no guaranteed way to reunite. The story is written from both Tom’s and Olivia’s points of view. The sex is sensual and explicit. It’s not erotica nor is it excessive, and it fits in with the rest of the story.
Jelic has created an intriguing blend of time travel, romance, and suspense. Her story opens with a female protagonist that might tempt you to close the book. But you don’t want to do that because Tom, the male protagonist, is too exceptional to miss. This story dares to break with formulaic expectations of a time-travel romance. The murder mystery and suspense is convincingly interwoven into the plot and the lives of Olivia and Tom. Moreover, when the two protagonists are first involved with each other, details from their previous lives apart constantly filter into the story, and you are acutely aware of the impermanent threads holding the couple in the same place and time. Tom and Olivia’s relationship is written with such realism and evolving closeness that you worry about them and root for their happiness. The way in which these two people must fight for their life together is filled with the kinds of twists and surprises that drive you to keep turning the pages of Love Remains until you know how everything is resolved.
