Tidebreakers Call by Shawn Connelly follows Finn Tempest, a young fisherman raised in the coastal village of Drift’s Edge after being found alone at sea as an infant. Finn has always felt drawn to the waters beyond his home, and the arrival of a recruiting ship from Starweaver Academy offers him the chance to train among the finest young sailors in the colonies. At the academy, Finn is assigned to lead the Tidebreakers, a newly assembled crew whose members have very different ideas about working together. His place there becomes even more unusual when the legendary Tidebreaker, a ship believed to possess a will of its own, responds to him. As Finn prepares for the academy’s dangerous Redwater Run, his rivalry with Cassian Drake intensifies, while rumors of a long-forgotten darkness begin to trouble the Endless Expanse.

Tidebreakers Call by Shawn Connelly opens the Starweaver Academy series with a thrilling seafaring fantasy. Connelly is just so good at making the ocean feel unpredictable, which comes through during Instructor Brynn Waveborne’s navigation exercise, when Finn pilots an academy skiff through shifting currents. I could almost feel the deck moving beneath my feet. What I love most is the way the sea magic belongs to this world. In Instructor Windmere’s lesson at the Oceanic Magic Tower, an eerie green light stirs beneath the water in an enchanted basin, and the room seems to hold its breath. The ancient threat surrounding these sailors feels genuinely unsettling. Overall, this is a wonderful opening to a fantasy adventure series, and I am really looking forward to the next book in the series. Very highly recommended.

Shawn Connelly’s Tidebreakers Call takes readers to Starweaver Academy, a school where students learn how to sail in the dangerous Endless Expanse. Readers will meet Finn Tempest, a fisherman's son, who becomes the captain of the legendary Tidebreaker. The Tidebreaker is a unique ship that responds to Finn using ancient magic. Finn begins leading a team of cadet sailors through the Redwater Run, a treacherous sea race. The race is interrupted when rival captain Cassian Drake alters the path of Finn's ship. Additionally, a ghost ship known as the Abyssal Revenant appears just outside the borders of Starweaver Academy. The appearance of the Abyssal Revenant signals a threat related to the Abyss, a destructive force located beneath the ocean. At the same time, Finn begins to experience visions of his biological parents, causing Finn to question his relationship to the Tidebreaker. It appears as though the Tidebreaker was designed for purposes other than academy competitions, meaning Finn may encounter the Abyss.

Shawn Connelly's Tidebreakers Call creates an atmosphere of salty sea air and is set in a location that is visual and cool to explore. Havenmoor's curved harbor appears to be bustling with activity. The architectural design of Starweaver Academy is creatively developed as well, particularly in how naturally magic fits into the lifestyle of those who live by the sea. A magical basin at the Oceanic Magic Tower, located on the edge of the cliff, produces a twisting green shadow which appears to have emerged from the sea. Finn's relationships illustrate each character through their interactions. In one instance, during a combat exercise, Finn listens to navigator Marina's suggestion as to what action he should take next, and it demonstrates how well Finn works as part of a team. Rowan's confession to Lena regarding his concern for Finn adds a sense of gentleness to Rowan's typical humor. The conversations among the ship's crew flow smoothly, and nautical fantasy fans will definitely want to be aboard this literary ship!
