Mariard Volume 1: The Gifting by Christine Jones is not your average science fiction novel. It all starts with a prophecy. Two are born to a kingdom. One is good, one is evil. The kingdom is divided, each seed using its intelligence and power to either save or destroy the Mariard. A princess is tricked into becoming a priestess - one who isn’t properly trained but must do everything she can to save humanity’s way of life, even if it means losing herself and those she loves to save them.
I was drawn into The Gifting from page one. Christine Jones created an amazing build-up of deceit and anticipation within the first few chapters and I was hooked. Mariard is a quick, science fiction/fantasy story. It was written with a perfect blend of technology and civilization advancements, combined with the added fun of magic. This story kept me on the edge of my seat. Jones was able to make me feel sad, and angry, and smile at moments throughout the story. She has a way of drawing you in and making each character someone you want to continue reading about, even the ones you don’t think you’d like. The magic system is fascinating and unique. There were quite a few scenes that were beautifully written, and I went back to reread them because I enjoyed them so much. This story contains a wonderful blend of good versus evil, family and sacrifice, deception, and love in times of great sadness and horror. I really enjoyed this book. I look forward to reading more from this author.
